Heliomotion Microgrid

In a microgrid setup, electricity producers and consumers operate synchronized to the utility grid, but can also disconnect to “island mode” and function autonomously from the utility grid. A group of Heliomotion units run connected to the microgrid using grid-tied inverters. The power produced reduces the need to purchase electricity and any surplus is sold to the grid. During a power outage the units continue supplying power to the microgrid.

Maysun 60-cell panels provide a good balance between high efficiency and low price. Larger Amerisolar 72-cell panels with higher power output will be available as of March 2020.

Grid-tied microinverter

A grid-tied inverter converts DC power from solar panels to 230VAC household electricity which is synchronized to the grid. The locally produced power reduces the need to purchase electricity and the surplus is supplied to the grid. An agreement must be made with your utility provider to become a producer of electricity.

Battery solar station

A solar station combines a solar battery charger with an inverter and a utility power relay. It can be used with or without utility power, and works even if the power is out. The station automatically switches to utility power if available when solar and battery power is insufficient. The power from the station is not supplied to the grid, but used locally, via new electrical outlets or connected to existing outlets via the building’s fuse box. When the batteries are full any surplus solar power not consumed will be discarded.

Solar batteries

For backup purposes or occasional use (such as in a summer cottage) we recommend using GEL batteries, as they are cost effective when a limited number of charge/discharge cycles are needed. Deep-cycle GEL batteries are maintenance free, can be used indoors, have a long lifetime compared with other lead-acid battery types, and they are made to withstand deep discharge cycles. A GEL battery will loose about 20% of its max capacity after either 500 cycles 70% deep, 750 cycles 50% deep, or 1800 cycles 30% deep.

For daily use we recommend LiFePO4 batteries, as they have exceptional cycle lifetime. Lithium-ion batteries of the LiFePO4 type are extremely durable and can store five times more energy over their lifetime (4000 cycles, 100% depth of discharge) than premium lead-acid batteries of the GEL type. Because of the deeper discharge 100Ah of LiFePO4 is comparable to 200 Ah of GEL. Furthermore, in comparison with GEL the LiFePO4 type weighs 60% less per kWh, has 50% less volume, higher working efficiency (96-99% vs 80-90%), lower self-discharge rate (2%/month @25 °C), and allows use of the full battery capacity without damaging the battery.

Installation Cable

An outdoor underground cable (MCMK) with 5 cores used for connecting the installation to the house. Suitable for any Heliomotion configuration. Can be buried directly into the ground, but using a cable duct is recommended. The 2.5 mm2 cable is appropriate for cable lengths of up to 40 meters. 6 mm2 is recommended for longer distances.

Energy Monitoring

A cloud based energy monitoring device for measuring PV generation on 3-phases. Live readings and historical data is accessible through an online dashboard or mobile app (Android & iPhone). The service is free for 2 years and after that there's a £19.95 subscription fee every 2 years.
